A Definitive Ranking of Comedies You Should Be Watching
YOU’VE WATCHED CATASTROPHE. You’re done with Broad City. And you can’t really watch Parks & Rec again.
What’s a television addict to do? Here are ten television comedies to feast your eyes on.
10. High Maintenance
Giphy Giphy
High Maintenance started out as a web series, but migrated to telly in 2016. The HBO series follows a weed dealer in New York and all the weird and wonderful characters he meets along the way. It’s funny, heartbreaking and occasionally life-affirming. Get stuck into it.
9. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Available to stream on Netflix
Giphy Giphy
The beloved musical comedy series stars Rachel Bloom as a young woman who quits her high-paying job to follow her teenage ex-boyfriend across the country to a sleepy town in California. It’s charming, whimsical and all kinds of inventive. (And the songs are bangers.)
8. Man Seeking Woman
Giphy Giphy
A weird and wonderful take on the traditional romantic comedy from the hilarious Simon Rich. (Side-note: if you haven’t read Simon Rich’s pieces for The New Yorker, you should.)
Man Seeking Woman stars Jay Baruchel as a newly single man looking for love. Its sweet, surreal sensibility means that it can sometimes resemble a fantasy novel. (Dragons and time travel, anyone?) Well worth a gander for all the romantic nerds out there.
7. Fleabag
Giphy Giphy
Fleabag was one of the buzziest television shows of last year and with good reason — it’s completely excellent and eminently bingeworthy. It’s dark, it’s funny and frequently filthy. Put it on your to-watch list immediately.
Be warned: there are only six episodes, so savour them.
6. Please Like Me
Giphy Giphy
Please Like Me is an Australian sitcom that’s swiftly becoming one of the most praised shows on television. The series follows Josh, a twentysomething coming to terms with his sexuality and navigating the tricky worlds of dating, friends and family.
The Guardian called it one of the “most honest and devastating” programmes on television while The Ringer praised it as a return to form for the “hangout sitcom”. Seek it out.
5. The Good Place
Giphy Giphy
The Good Place comes from the creators of Parks and Recreation, and retains that show’s cheery, good-natured vibes.
The show follows Kristen Bell as a woman who is mistakenly admitted to The Good Place, a sort of heaven inhabited by only the most virtuous people on Earth, after she dies. She must learn to shake off her bad habits lest she be sent to the fiery embers of hell.
It’s warm and surprisingly though-provoking.
4. Chewing Gum
Available on All 4
Giphy Giphy
The BAFTA-winning E4 series follows Tracey, a devout Christian desperate to lose her virginity. Written by and starring Michaela Coel, it’ll make you hoot with laughter.
3. Insecure
Giphy Giphy
Insecure follows the trials and tribulations of Issa and Molly, two twentysomething friends living in Los Angeles, grappling with career stagnation and tricky love lives. If you’re a fan of Girls and Broad City, you’ll love this.
2. Atlanta
Giphy Giphy
You may know Donald Glover from his role in Community. Atlanta, however, is an entirely different beast. The series follows Ern, a college dropout who takes it upon himself to manage his cousin’s ascendant rap career.
It’s one of the freshest, most vibrant shows on television and beat off stiff competition to pick up two Golden Globes a few weeks ago. If you haven’t already gotten on board, now is the time.
1. Search Party
Available on All 4
Giphy Giphy
And finally, there’s Search Party. The series follows Dory, a young woman who takes it upon herself to track down an old classmate who has gone missing. Imagine if Serial was hosted by a group of narcissistic millennials and you have some idea of what Search Party is like.
Equal parts gripping and hilarious.
